Information

Matthias Dörfelt (1987, Hamburg, Germany) is a Los Angeles-based artist. He mainly works in software producing artifacts ranging from drawings, prints, animation, videos and interactive installations to robotics. He likes to describe his practice as instruction based art through the lens of drawing, computation, technology and automation. In his works he often trades control in favor of surprise because he strongly believes in computation as an expressive, playful and humorous tool. Despite being automatically generated, many of his works maintain a sense of human gesture, often times playing with the expectations we have towards technology end exploring what we perceive as genuinely human. Matthias will continue to explore these aspects by infusing technology with flaws, naivety and weirdness. He believes in a media arts practice that favors spontaneity over streamlining and hopes that his works contribute to shape our relationship to machines in a similar way.

Matthias work has been talked about in publications such as Hyperallergic, Wired, Gizmodo, Studio International, CAN, Page, étapes, The Economist, The Observer, Interactions and many more. His work has been shown internationally at Art Center Nabi (Seoul), ISEA 2019 (Gwangju), The Hammer (Los Angeles), B4BEL4B (Oakland), onedotzero festival (London), Lab for Electronic Arts and Performance (Berlin) and Art Souterrain (Montreal) among others.

Matthias studied at the Muthesius Kunsthochschule in Kiel and holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of California in Los Angeles.
